The short answer
Many children are ready to start karate around age 4, when they can follow simple instructions and participate in a short, structured class. At Crescent Moon Karate, Little Ninjas serves ages 4–6, Kids Karate ages 7–11, and Teen & Adult Martial Arts ages 12+. Readiness — not just age — is what matters.
Readiness signs to look for
- Can follow a simple two-step instruction from an adult who isn't a parent.
- Can participate in a short structured activity, even if they need reminders.
- Shows interest in movement, games or trying something new.
None of these need to be perfect. Learning to listen and focus is part of what young students practice.
How CMK groups students
- Little Ninjas (ages 4–6): listening, following directions, concentration, movement skills and introductory karate.
- Kids Karate (ages 7–11): traditional techniques, belt progression, discipline, leadership and self-control.
- Teen & Adult Martial Arts (ages 12+): traditional karate, practical self-defense, sparring and conditioning.
Is it ever too late to start?
No. Students of every age begin as beginners. Older kids often progress quickly because they can focus for longer — and beginners are the norm in our classes.
