A comprehensive guide to support your child's martial arts

journey at Crescent Moon Karate.

What to Expect

Your child's first few weeks: New students typically feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Our instructors are trained to make every child feel welcome and confident from day one.

Class structure: Each class begins with a bow-in ceremony, followed by warm-ups, technique practice, partner drills, and character education. Classes end with a cool-down and bow-out.

Progress timeline: Students typically test for their next belt every 2-3 months, depending on attendance and skill mastery. Consistent practice leads to faster progression.

Parent involvement: We encourage parents to watch classes, attend belt ceremonies, and support home practice. Regular communication with instructors helps ensure your child's success.

Uniform & Gear

Official Uniform (Gi)

All students receive an official Crescent Moon Karate gi (uniform) with their membership. The gi includes a jacket, pants, and belt. Students should wear their complete uniform to every class.

Protective Gear

For sparring classes, students will need hand pads, foot pads, headgear, and a mouthguard. We'll let you know when your child is ready for this equipment. Gear can be purchased through the dojo.

Care Instructions

Wash the gi in cold water and air dry to prevent shrinkage. Keep the belt clean and tied properly. Replace worn or damaged equipment promptly for safety.

Our #1 Question asked by parents

Frequently Asked Questions

What age should my child start martial arts?

We offer programs starting at age 4 with our Little Ninjas class. Children can begin martial arts as soon as they can follow basic instructions and participate in group activities. Each program is age-appropriate and designed to meet children at their developmental stage.

How long does it take to earn a Black Belt?

The journey to black belt typically takes 3-5 years with consistent training (2-3 times per week). However, this varies based on individual dedication, attendance, and skill mastery. We believe in quality over speed—every student progresses at their own pace.

Does my child need prior experience?

Absolutely not! Our programs are designed for complete beginners. We start with the fundamentals and build skills progressively. Every black belt started as a white belt—we'll meet your child exactly where they are.

What if my child is shy or lacks confidence?

Martial arts is one of the best activities for shy children! Our supportive environment, positive reinforcement, and gradual skill building naturally develop confidence. Many of our most confident students started out quiet and reserved.

Can parents watch class?

Yes! We have a comfortable viewing area where parents can watch classes. We encourage parent involvement and welcome you to observe your child's progress. Some children focus better without parents watching initially, and we'll discuss what works best for your family.

What about injuries and safty?

Safety is our top priority. All instructors are trained in proper safety protocols, and we use padded floors and appropriate protective equipment. Classes are supervised at all times, and we teach controlled techniques suitable for each age group. Martial arts actually has a lower injury rate than many team sports.

What if we need to miss a class?

We understand life happens! Please notify us in advance if your child will miss class. We offer makeup classes so your child doesn't fall behind. Consistent attendance is important for progress, but we're flexible when circumstances require it.

Are there any additional costs beyond tuition?

Your membership includes your uniform and regular classes. Additional costs include belt testing fees (typically $40-75), sparring equipment when needed, and optional special events like tournaments or workshops. We're transparent about all costs upfront.
